The Opportunity

Akron Children’s Hospital set out to expand its pediatric primary care network into Jackson Township, strengthening its presence in Stark County while improving access for local families. The project began on a previously undeveloped site, requiring a full ground-up solution.

The defining challenge was speed. With a fixed one-year timeline from approval to opening, the project demanded rapid decision-making, seamless coordination, and a delivery strategy capable of compressing design, documentation, and construction into a single continuous effort.

At the same time, the facility needed to do more than function. It had to create an environment where children feel calm, comfortable, and supported throughout their care experience.

The Solution

AVID approached the project with a fast-tracked delivery model grounded in experience. Drawing on a strong foundation of prior work with Akron Children’s, the team quickly aligned on program requirements and advanced into construction documentation without delay.

An integrated, in-house engineering team enabled real-time coordination across disciplines, eliminating handoff delays and accelerating decision-making. This approach resulted in permit approval by early January 2025, just three months after initial client sign-off.

While speed drove the process, design intent remained clear. The goal was to create a pediatric environment that reduces stress and supports positive experiences. The 10,500 SF layout balances operational efficiency with intuitive circulation, clear wayfinding, and a scaled, approachable environment. This helps children and families feel at ease from arrival through care.

The Results

The project stands as a proof point that accelerated delivery and thoughtful design can work in tandem, bringing high-quality healthcare environments to market faster.

  • Speed to Market: Full project lifecycle from approval to opening completed in just 12 months

  • Fast-Tracked Execution: Overlapping design, documentation, and construction phases reduced overall delivery time without disrupting quality

  • Efficient Clinical Layout: 10,500 SF facility supports 23 exam rooms and two child guidance spaces with streamlined workflow and clear circulation

  • Integrated Design Delivery: In-house architecture and engineering coordination enabled early permitting and minimized construction delays

  • Patient Experience: A calm, intuitive environment helps reduce anxiety and supports a more positive experience for children and families
